Web services, a back-room genius.

Web services are taking off in the software development community, but business awareness remains low. Web services promise a free exchange of data between different systems based on public standards. These standards are being developed by the Organisation for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards and the World Wide Web Consortium. Microsoft and IBM are leading the technology, according to Gartner, but Hewlett-Packard has released a range of products under the OpenView brand that should see it catch up. The major problem with web services, according to Dominic Schiavello of Computer Associates, is security.
