PhD time slots limit research.

A study by Macquarie University indicates that Australian universities are adopting a more conservative approach to doctoral studies. The report, "The Doctoral Education Experience", was authored by Ruth Neumann and commissioned by Australia's Department of Education and Training. It found that doctorates are expected to be completed in a relatively short time, and that the majority of doctoral candidates come from traditional academic backgrounds. The report also indicated that funding opportunities are becoming increasingly limited for candidates in "soft" fields of study, such as history and management.
