The Australian Senate Select Committee on Superannuation is winding down, but has made a great contribution. In more recent times its reports have been crucial in encouraging concern about the adequacy of retirement savings by Australians. The committee has also encouraged Australians in taking up complying pensions and annuities. It has worked to improve the safety of superannuation, and helped superannuation members to keep their funds secure even in the event of fraud or theft. A remaining, unfinished task is the removal of the surcharge on superannuation contributions made by higher income earners.
