Chinese operators may get 3G licences by the end of the year.

China is closer to developing a third generation (3G) network. The Chinese Ministry of Information Industry is reportedly ready to issue 3G wireless licences by the end of 2003. Among the companies likely to receive licences are China Unicom Limited, China Mobile (Hong Kong) Limited, China Telecom Corporation and China Netcom Corporation. The latter two companies, traditionally fixed-line operators, are keen to diversify into mobile communications.
