Sydney accountancy firm Firmstone & Feil has been called "avaricious" by the tobacco industry. The firm, representing 2000 retailers at this stage, is suing 16 tobacco companies and wholesalers for up to $A100 million in licence fees. The High Court ruled in 1997 that the fees were illegal and state governments could not accept them. If successful, Firmstone & Feil would get up to one-third of any payment. Philip Morris and British American Tobacco settled a similar case for about $A100 million in September 2002. Firmstone & Feil is representing retailers not covered by that case.
