Companies face hefty fines for sending spam.

Australasian Business Intelligence, September, 2003

Sep 18, 2003 (The Courier-Mail - ABIX via COMTEX)

The Australian Government has introduced a new bill, which prohibits the sending of unsolicited electronic mail. The Internet Industry Association estimates that 50 per cent of all email is "spam". The Spam Bill 2003 includes penalties of up to $A1.1m a day for Australian companies that continually breach the new legislation. Charities, government organisations and religious organisations will be exempt from the anti-spam laws. The Australian Communications Authority will be responsible for enforcing the penalties, which are also applicable to individuals.
