Business intelligence (BI) software is a growing sector in the US. Cognos's stock has risen 69 per cent in 2002-03 and that of Business Objects 83 per cent. Other successful companies include Hyperion Solutions and the SAS Institute. BI software analyses a company's regular figures such as sales receipts, warehouse stocks, customer complaints and receivables ledgers. The smaller companies have embarked on a round of acquisitions and product launches to ready themselves for the onslaught by the giants Microsoft, SAP and Oracle, who are keen to get in on the action.
