Shareholders of General Motors (GM) have approved a bid by News Corporation to acquire 34 per cent of Hughes Electronics. The stake in Hughes will give News control of satellite television company DirecTV. While GM shareholders have approved the $A10.9bn deal, it still must be approved by regulators. Ownership of DirecTV will give Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation a global satellite television audience. The company also owns pay television networks in Australia, Latin America and Asia.
