Code calls ISPs into the balancing act.

Cybercrime is an issue of increasing importance in Australia, and attention is turning to the role played by ISPs. In particular their responsibilities associated with record keeping and disclosure requirements are receiving scrutiny from the Australian Government. There is a necessary balance between privacy concerns and the need to curb criminal activity. The Internet Industry Association proposes a code of conduct for its ISP members related to cybercrime, mainly concerning co-operation with authorities and access to information. The code offers members a defence against charges of non-compliance. How long records should be maintained and privacy requirements are core elements of the proposals....
