South Korean president Roh Moo Hyun is facing political instability after only seven months in office. In early October 2003, 37 loyalists left the Millennium Democratic Party. Roh has been blamed for a recession, unable to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis and even pestered by the US to contribute troops to Iraq. While Roh is partly to blame for his troubles, the South Korean political system should also share some blame. South Korean leaders can only sit a single five-year term and they enter office with an impossible set of tasks to achieve. Some of Roh's enemies are lawmakers from his own party who have stalled efforts to implement his policies. His presidency does not run out until 2008.
