In 1953, Australians were consuming 0.5 kilograms of coffee per year each. In 2003, it is nearly 3 kilograms per year. The use of caffeine by workers to counter the effects of sleep-deprivation will be discussed at a conference in Sydney on "sleep loss and its impact on the workplace" . Among the international experts attending is Dr Naomi Rogers, the University of Pennsylvania's assistant professor of sleep and chronobiology, who says the syndrome is also evident in the 12 to 15-year-old age group, except that energy drinks are the source of caffeine instead of coffee.
