Many Australians who are close to retirement age own investment properties. Both Paul Maddock from MLC and Peter Hogan from Colonial First State note that retirees should not purely rely on rental from such properties for their retirement income. David Shirlow from Macquarie Bank says that some owners of investment property may decide to establish a self-managed superannuation fund to "house" their property, as this can provide them with tax benefits. However, he notes that many property owners are likely to find that their best course of action is to sell their property and invest the proceeds in equities.
