The living board.

Australasian Business Intelligence, October, 2003

Recent business failures like those of HIH and One.Tel have resulted in calls for improved corporate governance. However, it is argued that the present emphasis on practices and guidelines such as those laid down by the Australian Stock Exchange will not improve corporate governance by itself, and that more focus needs to be placed on the concept of a company's board as a living system. Research indicates that characteristics of successful living systems include encouraging diversity through dealing with different people or ideas, and seeking what are referred to as "uncommon connections".
