Japanese stocks take major hit.

The Japanese stockmarket fell sharply on 23 October 2003. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average index dropped 554.46 points to 10,335.16. The Topix index lost 56.72 points to 1,017.03. It was the biggest drop in share prices since 11 September 2001. Mizuho Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui and Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group were among the most affected. In Hong Kong, Hang Seng index fell 501.45 points to 11,737.18, with such companies as Television Broadcasts, China Unicom and PCCW recording significant falls.
