The Australian Government's proposed university funding reforms have an adverse impact on computer science training. Professor Paul Compton of the University of New South Wales says that funding for computer science courses could fall by more than 25 as a result of the Government's decision to introduce a per-student funding regime. One of the problems with the new regime is that no distinction is made between the funding required for a student learning high-level programming, compared with a student training in help-desk style IT functions. Such a distinction is made in other areas, such as medicine, where radiology or neurosurgical students receive more funding than nurses.
