Australia's Macquarie Airports (MAp) has confirmed it now controls Brussels International Airport Company. CEO Kerrie Mather said on 9 November 2004 that MAp will pay $A895 million for 52 of the company, with parent Macquarie Bank taking 18 and the Belgian Government the remaining 30. She said the government had spent $1.19 billion in improving the airport over the past two years and it was under-utilised since the failure of flagship airline Sabena. Brussels Airport is close to the city and within a two-hour drive for the whole population of Belgium, which numbers 10.3 million people.
