Australian beer and wine major Foster's Group is retrenching staff in a cost-saving campaign. Most of the lost positions are at the head office in Melbourne in such departments as information technology, human resources, corporate affairs and finance and taxation. About 100 positions have been scrapped to the end of January 2005, in the wake of a five-month review by consultant McKinsey & Company. Meanwhile, the Australian Takeovers Panel has started hearing applications by Southcorp, aimed at thwarting Foster's $A3.1bn takeover bid for the wine group.
