A public figure in the US has made some very controversial remarks. Lawrence Summers, the president of Harvard University, spoke at a conference when he suggested that the inbuilt differences between the sexes may be the reason that fewer women succeed in science and mathematical careers. A leading biologist, Nancy Hopkins, walked out of the conference in protest. Five other participants said that they were offended by the remarks. The conference discussed women and minority groups in science and engineering. Harvard University has been accused of making more job offers to men than women. Originally published in the "Guardian".
