A new microchip with huge processing power, called the Cell, was launched in mid-February 2005. The Cell was developed by Toshiba, IBM and Sony. The parallel processing chip contains nine microprocessors that use supercomputer-style links to communicate with each other. It is anticipated that Sony's Playstation 3 console will contain four of the chips. IBM claims that after the Cell is refined, one chip will be able to process data at a speed of 256 billion floating point operations per second. There is debate about whether the Cell will succeed Intel's Pentium, given that much software is developed to run on Intel chips.
