Google Desktop Search, which can be downloaded from the Google web site, was released in October 2004. The application, which is still in "beta" allows users to search for content in files located in their local hard drives as well as their mapped network drives. It not only searches the text of Word, Excel and PowerPoint files but also Microsoft Outlook emails and Web histories. There are some security issues with it though. Microsoft is now accelerating the development of its own desktop search solution.
