French nuclear power group, Areva, has expressed interest in Australian mining company, WMC Resources. WMC is the target of a hostile $A8.4 billion takeover bid by Swiss mining company, Xstrata. Rumours of counterbids for WMC have not eventuated, including an expected scrip bid by Australian-listed Rio Tinto. WMC's shares fell by $A0.05 to $A7.44 on 24 February 2005. However, this is still above $A7, which is Xstrata's effective offer. Areva has made no definite offer, but its large size and interest in uranium could revive investor interest in WMC.
