Australasian Business Intelligence, March, 2005 by Kahler, Alison

Australian employees will be able to choose their own superannuation fund from 1 July 2005. Those thinking of changing funds should be very cautious. Some financial planners sell products on commission, so they will recommend superannuation funds which pay them high commissions. There is a fear that some employees will leave the low-cost superannuation plan run their employer and move into a higher-cost retail scheme for no real reason. The only real way to judge a superannuation fund is by the return after fees and taxes. Many industry funds charge only very small fees. The canny employee will do a lot of homework before making a choice.
