BHP Billiton has made a $A9 billion takeover bid for fellow Australian miner, WMC Resources. This bid exceeds the earlier bid by the Swiss-based Xstrata. BHP Billiton is well aware that another bidder may emerge. It is even possible that Xstrata may seek a partner for a joint bid. The CEO of Rio Tinto, Leigh Clifford, is said to be "gobsmacked" at the price offered by BHP Billiton. It is possible that other foreign groups may enter the bidding war, such as Inco, Phelps Dodge or Areva.
