IBM has developed a solution that enables people with hand tremors to use a computer mouse. Researcher Jim Levine has invented an "assistive mouse adapter" that cuts through the "noise" created by trembling hands. It works by digitally smoothing out motion data, and is compatible with any computer. While hand tremors are usually associated with Parkinson's disease, the condition also affects those suffering from a genetic disorder known as "essential tremor", which occurs in about one in 25 people. The product has been licensed to Montrose Secam.
