Changes to Australia's Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) are outlined in new legislation. The Australian Human Rights Commission Legislation Bill, once passed, will result in the abolition of its specialised commissioners. It will also mean that the HREOC will need to get permission from the Attorney-General before it can intervene in a court case. Philip Ruddock, the current Attorney-General, says the Bill is likely to be reintroduced into the Senate after 1 July 2005, when the Government gets control there. He said the Bill is not an attempt to "nobble" the HREOC.
