In Australia, Centennial Coal is close to gaining control of takeover target Austral Coal. By late on 6 April 2005 it had 46.6% acceptances, and Austral shareholders have a deadline of 7 April 2005 to accept or forgo Centennial's interim dividend of $A0.06 a share. Centennial chief financial officer Robert Dougall said it looked "fairly certain" that his company would go over the 50% level needed for control. He suggested that Swiss-based shareholder Glencore might sell, despite being speculated about earlier as a potential counter-bidder for Austral.
