Australian newspaper publisher, John Fairfax Holdings, missed the chance to lead in internet advertising. Online employment classified business, Seek, is capitalised at about $A550 million for its float. Seek has about two thirds of the online advertising market, which holds about 14 per cent of the total employment classifieds market. Seek expects to increase its revenue by taking market share from print advertising. Fairfax underestimated the potential of internet advertising. It could regain its leadership by gaining control of Seek, but the price would now be higher.
