Australian retailers are increasingly depending on tracking systems to monitor customer numbers and behaviour. Furniture retailer Ikea uses sensors to determine where and when customer traffic is the heaviest. The statistics help Ikea management compile staff rosters and marketing campaigns. However, despite the new technology available, retailers are still unable to analyse all aspects of consumer behaviour. Innovations have been made in biometric technology, which could potentially be used as part of customer loyalty programs. However, such programs could create privacy concerns.
