The world's airlines are likely to record a combined loss of $US5.5bn in 2005, according to the International Air Transport Association. This follows the spike in the oil price, which has seen airlines' fuel costs rise to a collective $US76bn. Peter Harbison of the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation stresses that Australian airlines are in a much better position financially than their overseas counterparts, which will remain profitable. However, moves to increase the fuel surcharge on airfares have prompted concerns that many Australians will now opt to choose holidays that do not involve flying.
