Australasian Business Intelligence, April, 2005

It appears that there are inconsistencies in two sets of retail figures in Australia. JP Morgan has noted the inconsistencies. It has found discrepancies between retail sales data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Cashcard Retail Index. It appears that different methodologies are in play. JP Morgan believes that the figures from Cashcard are more attuned to the actual state of retailing. JP Morgan has studied both sets of data and come to certain conclusions. It predicts that retail sales will stabilise in mid-2005 before weakening in the second half of 2005. The Australian economy will start to slow and consumers will rein in spending.
