The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) has submitted a paper to parliament regarding the application of the goods and services tax (GST). The tourism industry is concerned that adding GST to tour packages purchased by foreign visitors will have a disastrous effect on the industry. It is estimated by ATEC that the application of GST to foreign tourists will add 4.5 per cent to the cost of tourism exports. The Senate will vote on the contentious bill later in the year.
