Telstra says it is "likely" it will introduce internet telephony to the consumer market sometime in the next two years. There had been talk that the Australian telco would introduce a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) service in the first half of 2005. Telstra says there is little demand for VoIP over broadband, because standard telephony in Australia provides untimed high-quality calls and many of its customers use asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), which needs a traditional telephone line. It has been testing a VoIP product in Melbourne though.
