Coles Supermarkets has agreed to pay $A5 million to settle legal action against it by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC). The action was in regard to practices that the retailer engaged in New South Wales in regard to liquor licences that may have been in contravention of the Trade Practices Act. The ACCC has made similar allegations against Woolworths, Coles' main rival, but Woolworths is known to be keen to take the matter to the courts. John Fletcher, the CEO of Coles Myer, said that the practices that were the subject of the ACCC's actions "were very much in the past".
