Australian universities are liberal in their recruitment policies. They often look for candidates from the non-academic sector. The University of Melbourne is advertising for a deputy vice-chancellor in charge of innovation and development. Its recruiters were told to accept applications from people with commercial backgrounds. Maurice Newman, chairman of the Australian Stock Exchange, is also the chancellor of Macquarie University. Rob McLean, former executive at McKinsey & Company, is the dean of the Australian Graduate School of Management. John Roberts, former senior marketer at Telstra and AC Nielsen, is marketing professor at the same institution.
