The Australian sharemarket is quite lacklustre at the moment. This has not helped smaller players in the margin lending business. There is ongoing consolidation in this area, with larger groups swallowing smaller ones. In 2005, there are only 17 providers of margin lending, down from 22 some three years ago. Key players in this field include Adelaide Bank and its subsidiary, Leveraged Equities, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Macquarie Bank, BT and St George Bank. Smaller players include the ANZ Bank, Citigroup Smith Barney, National Australia Bank and HSBC.
