There are benefits and disadvantages associated with share buyback schemes. Australian investors often complain that share buybacks only benefit low-income shareholders. Stock repurchasing schemes have been the subject of intense scrutiny by the Australian Government, however changes to buyback laws are unlikely to change due to the economic benefits offered by the schemes. Before launching a buyback scheme, companies usually consult the Australian Taxation Office to determine how the scheme will be structured.
