Low-tar tobacco labels to be scrapped.(Brief Article)

The words "light" and "mild' will no longer be used by Australia's largest tobacco companies, British American Tobacco and Philip Morris. They have also agreed to hand over $A8 million to fund anti-smoking education programs. The deal was announced by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission on 12 May 2005, after it ruled that the terms are misleading. Imperial Tobacco Australia has also agreed to remove the offending words from cigarette packets, but it has refused to contribute to the education campaign.
