Downer keeping eyes on bigger prize.

Australasian Business Intelligence, June, 2005

Downer EDI MD Stephen Gillies believes the group can still secure two suburban rail contracts with New South Wales' RailCorp. The Australian engineering and rail services group recently lost its bid for Alstom Australia as well as outer-suburban work for RailCorp to rival, United Group. Gillies says it was an Alstom system though that was behind the problems Downer had with Sydney's "Millennium" trains. He also believes Alstom is a high-risk purchase and United has paid a high price for it. A decision on RailCorp's $A4 billion public-private partnership deals should be made in early 2006.
