A new software program called Learning Activity Management System (LAMS) was released in April 2005. The free open-source software, which was developed by Macquarie e- Learning Software Centre of Excellence (MELCOE), an unit of Australia's Macquarie University, assists in the design and presentation of online school lessons. It cost MELCOE around $A3 million to develop LAMS. Over 2,000 copies of LAMS were downloaded in its first month of release, with over half of the copies being downloaded outside of Australia.
