Oil and gas from the Kipper Field in Bass Strait will be processed at an Esso Australia plant in Victoria. Joint venture partners Woodside Petroleum, Santos, BHP Billiton and Esso want to process the first gas from the field in 2009. Esso operates the Kipper project on behalf of the partners, and plans to start initial design and engineering in early 2006. Mark Nolan, the chairman of Esso's parent, ExxonMobil Australia, says the project could potentially be one of Victoria's biggest new gas projects over the medium-term, and will support growth in gas sales in the Gippsland region.
