Parochialism rules.

The state-based nature of many of Australia's biggest charities and community organisations is under threat. Although the Australian not- for-profit sector is worth $A70 billion, employs 600,000 people and accounts for 10 per cent of the economy, its critics note that having most of its fund-raising and membership drives undertaken by state divisions leads to inefficiency and inconsistent marketing and branding. One such organisation that has managed to change its structure to one that is more nationally focused is the Australian Red Cross, which raised $A374.5 million in 2004.
