Aug 14, 2005 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian sharemarket closed at a fresh high on 12 August 2005, with the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 up nine points at 4,469.2. The broader All Ordinaries Index closed at a new high of 4,431.8. Oxiana continued to benefit from speculation about a takeover bid from Xstrata, rising $A0.11 to finish at $A1.24,
while Telstra eased $A0.11 to a nine-month low of $A4.74. Macquarie Bank rallied $A0.92 to $A63.56 and the Commonwealth Bank retreated $A0.22 to $A38.28. The Australian dollar rose to $US0.7729 early in the European trading session, compared with $US76.98 previously.
