Drug to slow progress of Alzheimer's on way.

Aug 04, 2005 (The Mercury - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australian scientists have made an important discovery that could facilitate the

development of a drug to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. A toxin that has a significant role in the development of the disease has been identified by a research team led by Gilles Guillemin of the University of New South Wales. The toxin, quinolinic acid, destroys nerve cells in the

brain and results in dysfunction. The progression of Alzheimer's disease could be slowed if the production or effect of the

toxin could be blocked, St Vincent's Hospital Sydney's director of neurology, Bruce Brew, has noted.
