The unbearable absence of smelling.

Australasian Business Intelligence, September, 2005

Byline: Mick O'Hare

Sep 27, 2005 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Most scientists believe that the loss of the sense of smell, or anosmia, is irreversible.

Tim Jacob, a researcher at Cardiff University in Great Britain, says the loss of smell is permanent and there is no effective medical treatment. However, Robert Henkin, a

cognitive neurologist and director of the Washington DC's Taste & Smell Clinic in the US, disagrees. His theophylline treatment seems to be effective, but a placebo- controlled trial is needed before Henkin's method can be approved for the treatment of anosmia.
