Australasian Business Intelligence, September, 2005

Sep 18, 2005 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Up to 45 of respondents to a KPMG survey of 200 companies claimed that goods and services tax (GST) audits identified areas of non- compliance. Approximately 45 per cent claimed that Australian Taxation Office (ATO) agents had a firm grasp of key issues and 40 per cent claimed that the tax office appeared
to have a "reasonable" understanding of GST accounting systems. According to the KPMG survey, ATO audits tend to focus on "timing matters" and general compliance.
