Sep 07, 2005 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Four of Australia's biggest telcos are preparing to launch third-generation (3G) services in 2005. The first 3G entrant in Australia, Hutchison, believes it will remain ahead of Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, but it has started slowly (its 3 brand has gained
500,000 services since the April 2003 start- date). IDC Australia forecasts that one in three mobile telephone users will be using 3G by 2009. Between 2005 and 2009 IDC also
predicts that non-voice telephone services, such as internet and music downloads, will progress from 18 per cent to 29 per cent.
