Oct 31, 2005 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Scientists at the Centre for Ultrahigh Bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS)
in Sydney have made an important discovery. They found that using a small piece of glass with a specific scratch in it can be used to amplify degrading signals sent over fibre
optic cables. The breakthrough will theoretically allow a 1,000-fold improvement in transmission speeds. CUDOS director Ben Eggleton argues the data transmission sector will quickly adopt the new technology over the decade to 2015.
