Oct 06, 2005 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The remaining four major independent mining groups in North America are prime takeover
targets. Falconbridge, Inco, Teck Cominco and Phelps Dodge are likely to be pursued soon by Australia's Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton, as well as Xstrata of Switzerland and Brazilian group Companhia Vale do Rio Doce. Xstrata is first off the blocks by purchasing a holding of 20 in Falconbridge,
spending $A2.2bn. The target's CEO, Derek Pannell, has told the Melbourne Mining Club that consolidation in the sector globally will continue.
