Top 10 miners peer into pits.

Dec 14, 2005 (Australian Mining - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The biggest ten Australian mining companies will participate in mining geomechanics
research. They include Anglo American, Barrick Gold, BHP Billiton Innovation, Newcrest Mining, Newmont Australia and Xstrata Queensland. According to CSIRO, $A2.6 million will be spent on a project to develop new methods of predicting rock slope reliability in large open pit mines. The largest open pit mines are up to 800 metres deep. Experts expect these depths to exceed 1,000 metres within 10 years.
