Australasian Business Intelligence, December, 2005

Dec 08, 2005 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The proportion of births performed by caesarean section in Australia rose from 19 per cent in 1994 to 27 per cent in 2002. In 2003, 28.5 per cent of all births were performed by caesarean. The increasing age of new mothers is believed to be a significant factor behind the trend. There is a direct correlation between a mother's age and the procedure. However, University
of New South Wales professor, Michael Chapman, says that about 10 per cent of his patients request caesareans without a medical
reason.
